初めまして、Imee Rose Zarate（アイミー ローズ　ザラーテ）です。
私は土木技術者として2024年11月にSMCCフィリピンズに入社し、2025年5月からグアム事務所でPMSコーディネーターとして勤務しています。これまでのクリスマスをすべてフィリピンで過ごしてきた私にとって、グアムで初めてクリスマスを体験することは、喜びに満ちた驚きの連続でした。この素晴らしい体験を皆さんにお話しさせてください。

I joined SMCC Philippines as a civil engineer in November 2024 and have been working as a PMS coordinator at the Guam office since May 2025. Having spent all my previous Christmases in the Philippines, experiencing Christmas in Guam for the first time was a series of joyful surprises. Let me share this wonderful experience with all of you.

故郷・フィリピンの涼しく風の強い天気とは異なり、12月のグアムは晴れて暖かい日もあれば、短時間の熱帯性のにわか雨に見舞われる日もありました。それでも、天気に関係なく、島全体の祭りの雰囲気を感じずにはいられませんでした。グアムのクリスマスシーズンは12月1日から12月30日まで続き、家族、友人、そしてコミュニティと一緒にゆっくりとお祝いを楽しむことができます。

Unlike the cool and windy weather of my homeland, the Philippines, December in Guam brought both sunny and warm days as well as days with brief tropical showers. Nevertheless, regardless of the weather, I couldn't help but feel the festive atmosphere throughout the entire island. Guam's Christmas season lasts from December 1st to December 30th, allowing people to leisurely enjoy celebrations with family, friends, and the community.

この期間に村や住宅街を歩いていると、祝祭的な雰囲気で満ちているのを感じることができます。街路や公園、建物は色とりどりのライト、きらめく装飾品で飾られ、家族連れや観光客は写真を撮ったり、陽気な周囲の環境を楽しんだりしています。

When walking through villages and residential areas during this period, you can feel that they are filled with a festive atmosphere. Streets, parks, and buildings are decorated with colorful lights and sparkling ornaments, while families and tourists take photos and enjoy the cheerful surrounding environment.

ショッピングモールでは、キャロル歌手たちが入り口付近で演奏し、彼らの歌声は買い物客の声やホリデー音楽と混じり合います。演奏は観客を引きつけて一体感を高め、モールを単なる買い物以上の、季節を体験する場にしています。学校でも生徒たちが廊下をクリスマス装飾で彩り、ホリデー精神を反映した陽気な空間を作り出しています。

At shopping malls, carol singers perform near the entrances, their voices blending with the sounds of shoppers and holiday music. Their performances attract audiences and foster a sense of unity, transforming the mall into more than just a shopping destination--a place to experience the season. In schools too, students decorate the hallways with Christmas ornaments, creating cheerful spaces that reflect the holiday spirit.

グアムのクリスマスの中心は、地元の人々が家族やコミュニティと過ごす時間です。多くの家庭では、クリスマスイブの夜通しのパーティーやクリスマス当日の集まりを開催し、しばしばポットラック形式で企画されます。誰もが食べ物や飲み物を持ち寄り、笑いと語らいに満ちた豊かな食事の後、家族が集まってプレゼントを交換し、お互いの時間を楽しみます。教会もクリスマスシーズンにおいて重要な役割を果たし、特別な礼拝やキャロル、コミュニティ活動を通じて絆を深めます。

The heart of Christmas in Guam is the time local people spend with their families and communities. Many households host all-night Christmas Eve parties and Christmas Day gatherings, often organized in potluck style. Everyone brings food and drinks, and after rich meals filled with laughter and conversation, families gather to exchange gifts and enjoy each other's company. Churches also play an important role during the Christmas season, strengthening bonds through special services, carols, and community activities.

美味しい料理も欠かせません。グアムにはクリスマス専用の料理はありませんが、祝日のテーブルは地元の人気料理でいっぱいです。焼きハム、赤米、各種ケラグエン、バーベキュー肉、七面鳥、ポットロースト、フライドチキン、ポテトサラダ、ゴライ・ハグン・スニ、フィナデネ、そして様々なデザートを楽しみました。それぞれの料理は丁寧に作られており、島の温かさとおもてなしの心を反映していました。

Delicious food is also essential. While Guam doesn't have Christmas-specific dishes, the holiday table is filled with popular local cuisine. We enjoyed baked ham, red rice, various kelaguen, barbecued meat, turkey, pot roast, fried chicken, potato salad, golay hagon suni, finadene, and various desserts. Each dish was carefully prepared, reflecting the island's warmth and spirit of hospitality.

当社の建設現場でも、スタッフ、作業員、そしてその家族の間でクリスマスの精神が息づいていました。クリスマスパーティーでは、マネージャーからの心のこもったホリデーグリーティング、子供と大人のための楽しいゲーム、エキサイティングな抽選賞品、そして美味しい料理のビュッフェなど盛りだくさんでした。忙しい仕事の日々にもかかわらず、このお祝いは皆の間に結束、チームワーク、そして強い仲間意識を育みました。

The Christmas spirit was alive among our staff, workers, and their families at our construction site as well. The Christmas party was packed with heartfelt holiday greetings from management, fun games for children and adults, exciting raffle prizes, and a delicious buffet of food. Despite the busy work days, this celebration fostered unity, teamwork, and a strong sense of camaraderie among everyone.

グアムで初めてクリスマスを体験することは、ユニークで心温まる経験でした。彩られた街並み、装飾、教会での祝祭から家族の集まり、美味しい料理、職場での友好的な交流まで、この季節はコミュニティ、信仰、そして誰もが歓迎されていると感じさせる島のハファアダイ精神を美しく組み合わせています。

Experiencing Christmas for the first time in Guam was a unique and heartwarming experience. From the colorful streets, decorations, and church celebrations to family gatherings, delicious food, and friendly interactions at work, this season beautifully combines community, faith, and the island's Hafa Adai spirit that makes everyone feel welcome.
